Slate Roof Cleaning

Slate roof on home in RI - c. 1933. What is the correct way to clean the roof of moderate build-up of lichens, mildew etc. A cleaning contractor proposes a "soft-wash" of chemicals (compositions unknown) that are sprayed on roof and not rinsed after application.
I understand that power-washing is not advised.
Are there specific brands of cleaners that are safe to use?

This is product I have used and had great success with. Works very well , will not kill grass or plants ,and is per friendly. We do rinse off the surrounding area after application just to be safe.

How did you apply this cleaner and do you have to wash it off?
